Finnish Tyre Recycling Ltd

Every year, 65,000 tonnes of car tyres are taken out of use in Finland. This amounts to around six million passenger car tyres, enough to fill approximately 340 football pitches. Our task is to keep nature clean on behalf of motorists and tyre industry professionals through a well-functioning recycling system. At the same time, we develop tyres into recycled material for the Finnish circular economy.

Voluntary action by the tyre industry created a system that works

It seems hard to believe that less than 30 years ago, the tyre industry faced a problem that would be almost impossible to imagine today. Tyres were used just as they are now, but once they reached the end of their road life, tyre sets ended up as waste in landfill or, even worse, directly in nature.

The first to recognise the problem were tyre industry operators and importers. To ensure the proper collection and recycling of their own products, tyre retailers, manufacturers and importers established Finnish Tyre Recycling Ltd in 1995.

Collection operations began in 1996 and have continued to develop into an increasingly efficient and comprehensive system. The tyre recycling rate has stabilised at almost 100 per cent, which means that practically every tyre used in Finland ultimately becomes a recycled product.

During our years of operation, we have collected and recycled more than one million tonnes of tyres.
