Recycling statistics
In Finland, an average of 65,000 tonnes of tyres are taken out of use each year. In practice, all tyres end up being recovered through the Finnish Tyre Recycling system. We collect and publish statistics on collection volumes and recovery, updated twice a year.

Tyre collection volumes and recovery
The annual volume of tyres collected and the volume of tyres directed to different recovery applications during the same year may differ from one another. For logistical reasons alone, collected tyres are placed in intermediate storage, during which they are also pre-processed according to the requirements of their future recovery use. At the same time, previously collected tyres are directed to recovery.
As a rule, every tyre sold and used in Finland is collected and recovered as recycled material in the circular economy. New uses for tyres are continuously being sought.

The tyres would fill Helsinki Olympic Stadium

Since our collection operations began in 1996, well over 1,000,000 tonnes of tyres have entered our recycling system.
For most of us, one million tonnes of rubber, reinforcing steel and reinforcing fibre is a difficult amount to picture. One way to imagine this massive quantity of tyres is to place it inside Helsinki Olympic Stadium.
By now, the stadium would already be filled for the third time if the tyres were stacked up to the height of the stadium tower. Let us keep this as a rough thought experiment, however, and direct tyre material to recovery instead. That way, athletes and spectators will fit into the Stadium much better too!
