Thanks to its properties, end-of-life tyre material has become a recommended material in infrastructure construction. Its advantage is its light weight, which allows large lightweight and supporting structures to be built even on soft ground where mineral aggregate would be too heavy.
Tyre material weighs only around one quarter of the weight of soil, which also makes transporting it to construction sites more efficient.
The MARA Decree enables the wide use of tyres
At the same time, using tyre material helps save virgin natural soil and aggregate materials, which cannot be restored once quarried. The use of tyre material on infrastructure sites is governed by the MARA Decree on earth construction.
Tyres can be used in infrastructure structures either whole or pre-processed as tyre shreds.
The structures last for a long time, but as society develops, needs such as road alignments may change. When a structure built using tyres is taken out of use, the tyres can be excavated and used again in other ways as recycled materials in the circular economy.
