This is how you recycle your tires

From an environmental perspective, it is beneficial to use products for as long as possible. With tyres, however, safety must also be taken into account. As a tyre wears down, it eventually becomes unsafe to use, at which point it should be directed into the circular economy for recycling. Recycling a tyre is straightforward when you know the key points.

Worn tyres belong in the circular economy

Under the Finnish Road Traffic Act, the minimum tread depth for summer tyres is 1.6 mm and for winter tyres 3.0 mm. At this point, tyres are at the legal limit. Any further wear makes them illegal.

In practice, however, tyre performance begins to decline earlier. The primary function of the tread is to channel water away from between the tyre and the road surface. For road safety, it is advisable to plan tyre replacement well before the legal limit is reached.

Recycle tyres without rims

As its name suggests, Suomen Rengaskierrätys Oy handles tyres, although in everyday language tyres are sometimes confused with wheels, meaning the combination of a rubber tyre and a metal rim.

If you have wheels with rims, please ensure that the rim is removed before delivering them for collection, either yourself or at a professional tyre shop. Rims should be taken to metal recycling.

Reasonable quantities are always accepted
